Long Liang – Weyl semimetals in torsional spacetime

2020-02-10 @ 16:00 - 16:30

  • Title: Weyl semimetals in torsional spacetime
  • Abstract: Weyl semimetals necessarily break the time-reversal or/and inversion symmetry. In the presence of spatially varying time-reversal or inversion symmetry breaking fields, we show that the Weyl fermions live in emergent torsional spacetime [1,2]. This allows us to fabricate interface between type I and type II Weyl semimetals [1], which is analogous to the black hole horizon. Torsion also contributes to the chiral anomaly [3], and this leads to a thermal magnetotorsional effect, which means that magnetization gradients perpendicular to the Weyl node separation give rise to temperature gradients depending only on the local positions of the Weyl nodes [2].  This effect could be observed in magnetic Weyl semimetal EuCd2As2 [4].
